Picture a tiny, spotless coffee bar in Shahpur Jat, Delhi, with a menu you can read in ten seconds, a host who looks like he is having the best day of his life, and not a single price anywhere. That is Kaala. You pay what you feel like paying, if you feel like paying at all.
Was the coffee the best I have ever had? Not really. Would I still bring a date here? If I were lucky enough, absolutely. Let me explain.

About the Place
Kaala (you will find it on Instagram as @kaala.bar) is a proper little hole in the wall, and I mean that as a compliment. It is aesthetic, it is clean, and watching the baristas work in that neat little space is half the fun.

The menu is refreshingly simple. There are just two or three coffee drinks on the daily menu, picked by the host, and that is it. No forty-item board, no decision paralysis, and no food either. Just coffee. On the day we went, the framed card on the wall read “World Coffee Day Edition” and “Dark Roast · Black Coffee”, with Sepoy & Co. named alongside Kaala.
The cafe advertises that it uses dark roasted beans, and I could taste that in the cup. What it does not tell you is the origin or the roaster, which, for a coffee nerd like me, is a bit of a shame.
And then there is the pricing. There isn’t any. You pay what you feel like paying, if you feel like paying (yes, you, you should). For the record, I paid INR 600 for our two orders. That came to three cups, since the Kaala Kola arrives as two servings.
The Not-So-Good Bits
The timing is really constrained. Kaala usually opens from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and when we were there, we were perhaps some of the last people to place and get our order. The shop closed just as we finished our coffee.
The no-price model sounds charming, but in practice it means a lot of judging: of the drink, of yourself, and of the amount you hand over while your friends, peers or the people standing by quietly judge you right back. For some people, not having a price is a genuine source of anxiety. My view is simple: if you have a product, you should value it as such. That said, I am not the judge of how one should run a business. If this works for them, I am happy for it.

There is no seating whatsoever. You order, and they hand you to-go cups. There is also very little management in the queue department. And if you are coming here during warm weather? Ooooh, be ready.
A Caveat Before the Coffee
To be perfectly candid, I generally do not like the taste of cold brew that has been steeped for a long time. Coffee tends to degrade pretty quickly over time.
When I make cold brew, I grind the coffee a little finer than I would for filter, bloom it with hot water (twice the weight of the coffee), and then add cold water, usually at 1:12 to 1:14 depending on the roast character of the coffee. I drink it pretty quickly too, mostly the same day or the next day at the latest. Beyond that, even the most precious coffee drifts towards a very generic, chocolatey, rubbery taste, with a bold, bitter flavour sitting at the back of your throat.
Since I taste great coffees regularly, brew them fresh, and keep adjusting each one so it has the best chance to express itself, my review comes from a different place. Please take it as such. (If you are new here, my About Me page has more on where my palate sits.)
About the Drinks
| Characteristics vis-à-vis Drinks | Peach Better Have My Money | Kaala Kola |
| What’s in It | Cold Brew (18 Hr), Peach Sparkling Water (from Sepoy & Co.) and Lime | Cold Brew Concentrate (18 Hr), Elderflower Tonic and a Grape as garnish. Comes as two servings |
| Taste & Texture | Pleasant and easy to drink. The peach sparkling water was a bit too sweet, with that long-steeped cold brew taste underneath. | Extremely high perceived bitterness. The tonic and the coffee tasted like two separate drinks. |
| Garnish | Lime, though I could not taste any | A grape that added nothing, and washed away the coffee flavour once eaten |
| Verdict | A good drink, especially if you are new to coffee drinks | Not my favourite |

My Honest Review
Peach Better Have My Money: With my caveat in mind, it was a good drink. Nothing extraordinary, nothing fancy, other than perhaps the cups it was served in. To be perfectly honest, I could not taste any lime in it whatsoever. The peach sparkling water was just a bit too sweet and a bit too much for my liking, and the coffee had that long-steeped cold brew taste I described above.
Now, I am a coffee nerd, so I have to nitpick everything. Just kidding. If you are venturing into coffee drinks, or you usually order coffee from cafes rather than brewing it yourself, this could be a beautiful, delicious drink for you.
Kaala Kola: First of all, the grape. I had no clue what it was doing there. A garnish like this is meant to elevate what is already in the cup. This one contributed nothing, apart from looking fancy, and eating it washed away all the coffee flavour. Enough about the garnish.
This drink was not my favourite. I also believe there was no cola in it, and that matters. Cola coffee, as punishing as it sounds, makes for a beautiful drink: the cola lends a creamy, vanilla-like note, and the coffee’s bitterness is subdued by it. Here, made from a cold brew concentrate and with no cola to soften it, the perceived bitterness was extremely high. The elderflower tonic tried as hard as it could, but it was not able to save the drink. The tonic and the coffee tasted like two separate drinks sharing a cup, not one.
The Experience
Here is the thing, though. Despite whatever my review says about the coffee, going to Kaala was a beautiful experience.
There is no formal parking, so you park wherever you find a spot. Ours was a little way off, so we walked to the bar, and that walk turned into some genuinely fun conversations with my friends. Once we got there, we were intrigued by all the kinds of people coming in, by the baristas preparing drinks in that clean, beautiful, aesthetically pleasing little space, and by the simple joy of sharing some of the loveliest moments with my closest friends.
The host looks like a joyful and cheerful person. I would have loved to have a conversation with him, had I not been this socially awkward.
For me, a place is never measured by how you walked in, or even by the minutes you spent inside. It is measured by what stays with you long after you have walked out.
By that measure, Kaala did beautifully. I actually liked the place, the people and the vibe there.

Who Should Go?
If you love a good-looking, aesthetic spot, if you are new to coffee drinks or usually order from cafes, or if you want somewhere memorable to hang out with friends (or a date), Kaala is worth a visit. Go at least once and have the experience. If you like it, unlike me, keep going back. After all, how does the opinion of one random dude on the internet matter when you yourself are loving something there?
If you are a cold brew purist who likes it fresh, need a place to sit, have no patience for queues, or get anxious about deciding a price under the gaze of strangers, keep your expectations in check. If you do go, aim for around 4 to 4:30 p.m. In summer, the later the better, just do not leave it so late that you miss the 5:30 closing.
I hope Kaala works on the taste of the coffee. The rest seems pretty good, to be honest. I am deeply grateful to have had this experience, and I wish this little hole in the wall the very best of luck.
Until next time, Drink Up! In case you feel that something is missing or something seems wrong, or there is anything else you would like to see covered in my cafe reviews, please feel free to submit your Feedback.
